Ingredient dictionary
Benzyl Benzoate is a clear, oily liquid with a mild, sweet scent. It mainly helps fragrances last and blend into formulas. It is on the label of 60 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
The catch: it is one of 26 scent allergens the EU asks brands to name on labels, so check labels if you react to fragrance, including essential-oil scents.
Benzyl benzoate is an ester, a molecule made by joining benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. It occurs naturally in some plants, such as ylang-ylang, but most supply used in products is made in a lab. Its scent is mild and sweet.
In formulas, it works mainly as a fragrance ingredient. It also acts as a solvent, helping oil-loving ingredients mix into water-based products. It is thin and light, so it spreads easily. It is often found in shampoos, dry shampoos, sunscreens and baby products.
Good for
Suits people who enjoy a lightly scented product and know they do not react to fragrance ingredients.
It is used widely in cosmetics and is generally well tolerated by most people. It is a known fragrance allergen, though, so anyone who reacts to scents should check labels and patch test new products before full use.
Mostly for scent. It gives the shampoo a mild, sweet smell and helps that fragrance blend evenly. As a solvent, it can also help oil-based ingredients mix in. It does not do the cleaning work; surfactants, the cleansing agents, do that.
