Benzyl salicylate is a fragrance ingredient. Chemists make it by combining benzyl alcohol with salicylic acid, and it also occurs naturally in some flowers, including jasmine and ylang-ylang. Its scent is mild, sweet and floral, which is why perfumers use it in many blends.
