Ingredient dictionary
Butyl Acetate is a fast-evaporating solvent that helps dissolve and spread other ingredients in a formula. It is on the label of 21 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Butyl Acetate is made by reacting butanol (a type of alcohol) with acetic acid, a process called esterification. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a fruity, pear-like smell. Because it is a solvent, it is mostly used to carry other ingredients rather than to act on skin or nails directly.
In nail polish, it helps film formers (the ingredients that make the coating) and pigments dissolve and spread evenly across the nail. As it evaporates, it leaves a thin, glossy layer behind. Formulators value it because it dries at a controlled pace, which helps the layer level out smoothly.
Good for
Suits nail products, where a fast, even drying solvent helps a smooth, glossy finish form.
Butyl acetate is a common solvent in nail polish and is generally considered well tolerated by skin. Its strong fumes are the main concern, so good airflow is wise while painting or drying nails.
Butyl acetate has a fruity, pear-like odor, which can add to the sweet smell of some nail polishes. The smell is strongest while the polish is wet, because the solvent is evaporating. It fades as the layer dries.
