What Capryloyl Salicylic Acid does

  • Exfoliates dead skin cells on the surface
  • Helps clear oil and debris inside pores
  • Helps smooth the look of rough skin

Capryloyl salicylic acid is made by attaching caprylic acid, an eight-carbon fatty acid, to salicylic acid. That fatty tail makes the molecule oil-soluble. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA, and this version keeps the exfoliating behavior of that family.

Formulators use it because it can work on the skin's surface and also move into oily pores. There it helps loosen the mix of oil and dead skin cells that can build up and clog them. It is used in acne products, body lotions and exfoliants. It is often described as gentler than plain salicylic acid, and it blends easily into lotions and gels.

Good for

Suits oily, blemish-prone or bumpy skin, including on the body, for people who want gentle exfoliation.

Frequently asked questions

Is capryloyl salicylic acid the same as salicylic acid?

No, but they are closely related. It is a salicylic acid molecule with a fatty chain attached, which makes it oil-soluble. Both belong to the beta hydroxy acid family, so both exfoliate, but the fatty version is often described as gentler.

Do I need sunscreen when using it?

Daily sunscreen is a good idea with any exfoliant, including this one. Exfoliating can leave skin more sensitive to sunlight, so a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day helps protect skin. Start slowly, with less frequent use, if your skin is new to acids.
