Also listed as: Caramel Color
Caramel is a brown colorant made by heating sugar. Its main job is to tint a formula, mostly in shampoos and hair color. It is on the label of 22 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Caramel is made by heating sugars until they darken into brown color compounds. The heating is controlled so the shade stays steady from batch to batch. It is a brown color you may already know from baked goods and some soft drinks.
Formulators use caramel to add a warm brown shade to shampoos and hair color. It dissolves well in water, so it blends evenly into water-based formulas. In shampoo, it gives the product its color and rinses away with the suds. In hair color, it helps build a brown tone. Like most colorants, it is used in small amounts.
Good for
Suits people who want a warm brown tone in shampoo or hair color.
Not really. Caramel in shampoo is there mainly for its brown color, so the product looks warm and rich. It does not work like a hair color on its own. For real shade change, a hair color product is needed.
Caramel is generally well tolerated, but sensitive skin can still react to any ingredient. Patch testing a hair color on a small area first is standard advice. Stop use and rinse well if redness, itching, or stinging appears.
