What Ceteareth-12 does

  • Blends oil and water into a stable mix
  • Helps cleansers lift oil and makeup
  • Adds a smooth, light feel to lotions

Ceteareth-12 starts with cetearyl alcohol, a waxy blend of cetyl and stearyl alcohols that can come from plant or animal fats or be made synthetically. It is reacted with ethylene oxide, which adds a water-friendly chain. The 12 refers to the average number of ethylene oxide units in that chain, so the molecule has one end that likes oil and one end that likes water.

Formulators use it because it is a nonionic emulsifier, meaning it carries no electrical charge and mixes well with many other ingredients. It helps lotions stay smooth and uniform instead of separating, and it helps cleansers loosen oil-based makeup so it rinses away. In the finished product it feels light and creamy rather than greasy.

Good for

Suits everyday lotions, creams and cleansers, including makeup removers and baby lotions that need a smooth, stable blend.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ceteareth-12 safe for baby skin?

Ceteareth-12 is often found in baby lotions and is generally well tolerated. Like any ingredient, it can bother a person with a specific sensitivity, so test a small area first. If redness or rash appears, stop using the product and ask a pediatrician.

Is Ceteareth-12 the same as cetearyl alcohol?

No, they are related but different. Cetearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol that adds body and softness. Ceteareth-12 is that alcohol with ethylene oxide attached, which makes it act as an emulsifier that blends oil and water.
