Cyclodextrin

Cyclodextrin is a ring-shaped sugar molecule made from starch. Its hollow center can hold other molecules, helping formulas stay stable and feel smooth. It is on the label of 11 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.

What Cyclodextrin does

  • Traps odor molecules so scents smell cleaner
  • Helps keep fragrances stable in formulas
  • Helps oil-based ingredients disperse evenly
  • Reduces tacky or greasy feel

Cyclodextrins are made from starch. Enzymes break the starch into ring-shaped sugar molecules. The outside of each ring likes water, while the inside is more welcoming to oily molecules. That shape lets a cyclodextrin wrap around a fragrance or oil molecule and hold it in place.

Formulators use it to keep scents smelling clean, to help certain ingredients stay stable, and to blend oil-based ingredients into water-based products. On the skin or hair, cyclodextrins feel light and smooth. They can soak up a little surface oil, so the finish often feels less tacky.

Good for

Suits formulas that need steadier fragrance, a lighter feel, or more even blending of oil-based ingredients.

Frequently asked questions

Is cyclodextrin safe for skin?

Cyclodextrin is generally well tolerated and is used in many cosmetic formulas. Like any ingredient, a small number of people may react, so patch testing a new product is a sensible habit. If you have a known sensitivity, check the full label first.

Does cyclodextrin remove odor?

It helps reduce how strong some odors smell. Cyclodextrin traps certain odor molecules inside its ring, so they are less noticeable. It does not replace good hygiene, and it works best as one part of a formula.
