Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone

Also listed as: Iscotrizinol

An oil-soluble organic sunscreen filter that absorbs ultraviolet light, mainly UVB rays, to help shield skin. It is on the label of 10 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.

The catch: it belongs to the chemical UV filter family, which some people with very sensitive skin prefer to avoid, as do those who want a mineral-only sunscreen.

  • Chemical UV filters. Organic sunscreen filters such as avobenzone, octocrylene and homosalate.

What Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone does

  • Absorbs UVB rays from sunlight
  • Adds some short-wave UVA coverage
  • Holds up well in sunlight
  • Dissolves in oils and emollients

Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone is a synthetic molecule. Chemists build it around a triazine ring, a shape that is good at soaking up ultraviolet light. Its oily side chains help it dissolve in the oil phase, so it blends into the formula instead of sitting on top.

Formulators use it because it is strong in the UVB range and holds up well in sunlight, so protection lasts under sun exposure. It is often paired with other filters to cover a wider part of the UV spectrum. On skin it tends to feel light and fairly smooth, with little or no white cast, though texture depends on the full formula.

Good for

Suits people comfortable with chemical sunscreens who want strong UVB coverage, and formulators building oil-based sun care.
