What Hydrogenated Lecithin does

Blends oil and water together
Keeps creamy textures stable
Conditions and softens the skin

Hydrogenated Lecithin starts as lecithin, a natural mix of fatty substances found in plants such as soybeans and sunflowers. It is treated with hydrogen, a step that makes its fatty parts more stable. That stability helps it resist going rancid, so products last longer on the shelf.

Formulators use it as an emulsifier, the part of a formula that keeps oil and water from separating. It also feels soft and slightly conditioning on the skin. You will see it often in exfoliating products, where it helps the formula stay smooth and even.

Good for

Generally suits most skin types, since it is a mild, widely used emulsifier and conditioner.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hydrogenated Lecithin the same as regular lecithin?

Not quite. It is lecithin that has been hydrogenated, which makes it more stable and less likely to spoil or smell off. Both work as emulsifiers, but the hydrogenated version tends to last longer in a product.

Is Hydrogenated Lecithin safe for sensitive skin?

It is generally well tolerated and is widely used in creams and lotions. Like any ingredient, it can rarely cause a reaction in someone sensitive to it. If you have sensitive skin, patch test a new product first and check the full ingredient list.
