What Methylparaben does

  • Keeps water-based formulas free from microbes
  • Helps products stay fresh over time
  • Works best at mildly acidic to neutral pH

Methylparaben is usually made in a lab. It is an ester, a type of compound formed from para-hydroxybenzoic acid and methanol, two simple building blocks. Formulators have used parabens for decades because they are effective against many bacteria and molds at low levels.

In a formula, it usually dissolves in the water part of the recipe, where microbes tend to grow. It has little scent and does not change color or texture much. Formulators often pair it with other preservatives to cover a wider range of microbes.

Good for

Suits everyday products with water in them, such as cleansers, moisturizers, shampoos and hand creams, which need protection from microbial growth.

Frequently asked questions

Is methylparaben safe?

Methylparaben has been studied for years and is allowed at set limits by regulators in many countries. Most people use it without problems. A few people are allergic, so check labels or patch test if you have known sensitivities.

Why do some products say paraben-free?

Many shoppers choose paraben-free products by personal preference, even though parabens are well studied. Paraben-free formulas use other preservatives instead, so look for a different preservative name on the label if you want to avoid parabens.
