PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides starts with caprylic and capric fatty acids, usually derived from coconut or palm oil, which are bonded to glycerin. A short chain of polyethylene glycol is then attached to make the molecule water-friendly. The 6 in the name is the average number of glycol units added. The result is a nonionic ingredient, meaning it carries no electrical charge.

Formulators use it because it helps oil and water blend into one smooth mix, which keeps lotions evenly blended. It also helps lift oily residue away during cleansing. In the final product it usually feels light and non-greasy, so it fits well in rinse-off and leave-on products.
