Ingredient dictionary
Propane is a light hydrocarbon gas that turns into a liquid under pressure, and it is mainly used as an aerosol propellant. It is on the label of 40 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Propane comes from petroleum refining and natural gas processing. It is separated, purified, and packed into aerosol cans under pressure. Cosmetic-grade propane is held to purity standards suitable for products that touch skin.
Formulators use propane because it is a gas at normal room temperature, so it creates a fine spray when the valve is pressed. It also evaporates quickly after spraying, which means the product dries fast and feels light. As it evaporates, it can give a cool, dry feel on skin or hair.
Good for
Suits aerosol sprays such as deodorants, dry shampoos and makeup removers that need a light, fast-drying mist.
Propane is widely used in aerosol cosmetics and is generally well tolerated. It is flammable, so aerosol cans should be kept away from heat, open flame, and direct sun, as the label directs.
Mostly no. Propane leaves the can as a gas and evaporates quickly, so it does not build up on skin or hair. The other ingredients in the product are what remain behind.
