Propylparaben

Propylparaben is a preservative used to help keep water-based products free from mold, yeast and bacteria. It belongs to the paraben family of preservatives. It is on the label of 26 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.

Propylparaben is a synthetic compound, the propyl ester of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Chemists make it in a lab from common building blocks, and it is a white powder with little or no smell.

Formulators use it to help keep water-based products free from mold, yeast and bacteria over their shelf life. It is often paired with other parabens for broader coverage. Compared with shorter parabens, it dissolves a little better in oil, so it blends smoothly into many formulas and usually does not change scent or texture at typical levels.
