Water that has been treated to remove minerals, salts and impurities. It is the base that most water-based formulas are built on, dissolving and carrying other ingredients. It is on the label of 2 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Purified water usually starts as tap or well water. It is then treated with methods such as filtration, reverse osmosis, deionization or distillation to remove minerals, salts and other particles. Once purified, it is clean and consistent from batch to batch, which is why formulators rely on it.
Water is the main ingredient in many lotions, creams, toners and cleansers. It dissolves salts and many other ingredients, and it helps spread a formula evenly over skin. As it dries, it leaves a light, fresh feel. Because water can also support microbes, water-based products rely on preservatives to stay stable.
Good for
Suits most skin types, since it is a simple, gentle base found in many cleansers and lotions.
Not quite. Tap water can carry minerals, chlorine and other particles that vary by location. Purified water has been treated to remove most of them, so its quality is more consistent from batch to batch.
Water alone does not keep skin moist for long. It is the carrier that brings humectants and moisturizers into a formula. For dry skin, look for products with ingredients that help hold moisture in, such as glycerin.
