Ingredient dictionary
A mild emulsifier and surfactant made from lauric acid and lactic acid. It helps oil and water blend, and it gives cleansers a soft, creamy lather. It is on the label of 35 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Sodium lauroyl lactylate is made by linking lauric acid, a fat usually taken from coconut or palm kernel oil, with lactic acid, then turning it into a sodium salt. One end of the molecule likes oil and the other likes water, so it sits between them and keeps the two mixed.
Formulators use it to hold lotions and creams together so they stay smooth and do not separate. It is common in cleansers, body washes, moisturizers and sunscreens. In washes, it helps build a soft, creamy foam. Many people find the feel light, though texture always depends on the full formula.
Good for
Suits most skin types, especially people who want a gentle, creamy wash or lotion for daily use.
It is generally well tolerated and appears in many gentle formulas. Like any ingredient, it can bother a reactive skin type, so a small patch test is a sensible first step.
It is usually made from plant-based lauric acid, but the exact source depends on the maker. Check the product's own sourcing statement or ask the maker if you need a strictly plant-based product.
