Sodium polyacrylate is a synthetic polymer, a large molecule, made by linking acrylic acid into long chains and then turning them into a sodium salt, a water-friendly form. The chains can take up and hold a lot of water, which is why the same family of materials shows up in absorbent products. In beauty, formulators use it in small amounts as a thickener.

In a lotion or cleanser, it swells in water and builds body, so the product feels richer and keeps its texture in the bottle. It also helps keep the water and oil parts from separating over time. On skin it feels smooth and slightly cushiony, and it is large enough that it stays mostly on the surface rather than sinking in.
