A sugar-derived film former, made from sucrose and two organic acids, that forms a thin, glossy layer on the surface of a product. It is on the label of 9 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Sucrose acetate isobutyrate is a sugar ester. Chemists make it by reacting sucrose, the common table sweetener, with acetic and isobutyric acids. The result is a clear, hard resin that dissolves in many solvents but not in water.
Formulators use it because it forms a smooth, glossy film as the solvent evaporates. In nail polish it helps color stick and wear well. In hair sprays it helps hold styles. It dries to a firm finish rather than a soft or greasy feel, so it is not a moisturizer.
Good for
Suits nail polish, hair styling and makeup formulas that need a long-lasting, glossy finish.
It is generally well tolerated, and it is mainly used in nail and hair products rather than skincare. If you notice a reaction to any ingredient, stop using the product and check with a doctor.
It is made from sucrose, which is a plant sugar, plus acids that are usually made synthetically. Because of this it is generally considered plant-derived. If you need certainty, check with the product's maker about sourcing.
