Also listed as: GLDA
Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate is a chelating agent, a salt made from glutamic acid, that grabs onto metal ions in water and keeps formulas stable. It is on the label of 65 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
GLDA is made from glutamic acid, an amino acid found naturally in many foods and in the body. It is sold as a salt, which means it dissolves easily in water. Chemists developed it as a chelator that breaks down more readily in nature than older options such as EDTA.
Formulators use it to tie up calcium and magnesium, the minerals that make water hard. Without a chelator, these minerals can reduce lather, leave films on skin or hair, and affect scent and color over time. It works in the background, so you usually won't notice it in use.
Good for
Helpful in rinse-off products like body wash and shampoo, especially for people with hard water.
It is used in many rinse-off and leave-on products and is generally well tolerated. As with any ingredient, a small number of people may react to a formula as a whole. If you have sensitive skin, patch test a new product first.
GLDA does a similar job to EDTA by binding metal ions. It is often described as more biodegradable, so formulators pick it when they want a chelator that breaks down more easily once it is washed away. Overall quality depends on the full formula, not one ingredient.
