Ingredient dictionary
Triethoxycaprylylsilane is a silicon-based coating agent that helps powders and pigments repel water and mix more evenly into oils and other ingredients. It is on the label of 39 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.
Triethoxycaprylylsilane is a man-made silicon compound. Its main part is a short eight-carbon tail, called caprylyl, joined to a silicon atom that carries three ethoxy groups. The ethoxy groups are the reactive end. They react with water and then bond to mineral surfaces, leaving a thin, water-resistant layer behind.
Formulators mainly use it to coat pigments and mineral powders, such as iron oxides, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Treated particles repel water better and spread more evenly in oils and waxes. In powders, that can mean less clumping when moisture is present. Because it coats other particles, you rarely feel it as a separate ingredient.
Good for
Most useful in makeup and mineral-based products, where pigments need to stay evenly mixed and resist water.
It is used in cosmetics as a coating and is generally considered well tolerated. Skin reactions are uncommon, but if you have sensitive skin, patch test any new product first.
Not quite. It is a silane, a close relative of silicones, and it behaves differently. Silicones are usually long chains called polymers, while this is a small molecule that bonds to surfaces.
