What Zinc Gluconate does

Adds zinc to a formula
Helps control odor in deodorants
Gives a smooth, comfortable skin feel
Dissolves easily in water-based products

Zinc gluconate is made by combining zinc with gluconic acid. Gluconic acid is typically produced from glucose, a simple sugar, through fermentation. Zinc is a mineral the body needs in small amounts, and it is present in skin.

Formulators use zinc gluconate to add zinc to water-based products. It dissolves well in water, so it blends smoothly into washes and lotions. In deodorants, zinc salts are used to help control odor. Its feel is light and clean rather than heavy.

Good for

Suits people who like zinc in water-based washes, deodorants and hair products, and is generally well tolerated.

Frequently asked questions

Is zinc gluconate safe for sensitive skin?

It is generally well tolerated and mild in most formulas. Like any ingredient, it can bother some people, so patch testing a new product first is a sensible habit. A dermatologist can advise if you have a known sensitivity.

Is zinc gluconate the same as zinc oxide?

No. Zinc oxide is a mineral used in sunscreens and does not dissolve in water, while zinc gluconate is a salt that dissolves easily in water. They are used for different jobs in formulas.
